PHILIPSBURG--Tony Rombley has been appointed national coach for St. Maarten Baseball. The St. Maarten National Baseball Association signed an agreement with Rombley and his Baseball International School to organize a SXM Baseball Academy that will be responsible for selection training and provide training for coaches.
“This is a whole new approach to putting St. Maarten Baseball back on the map,” said Rombley. “We want to cooperate with all stakeholders involved in Baseball on the island, including the French side.”
Rombley was born on Aruba Anthony Gonzalez Rombley, but goes by Coach Tony. He started playing ball in Aruba in 1964 and went on to play for the Dutch National team.
He served in the Dutch Marine Corps from 1978 to 1998. While in the Marines he stayed involved with European baseball moving from player, to trainer and eventually manager.
He started his own baseball academy, BIS, in 2008 and has now expanded to open a second BIS on St. Maarten.
By 2009 he was manager of the Kingdom Games age 15-17 team that won the championship.
Since 2012 Rombley has also served as a Global Consultant for the Cincinnati Reds.
