ST. PETERS--Sunday eight students and two teachers of the Milton Peters College will depart for Amsterdam to participate in the ‘School Final’ of the Olympic Moves Competition. Joined by basketball coach Paul Bell, the team will compete to become the best three-versus-three high school basketball team of the Dutch Kingdom. MPC will play against other high school teams, including a team from the Gwendoline van Putten School of Statia.
It is the first time that Sint Maarten is represented in the Olympic Moves Competition, which is known to be the largest high school competition of the Netherlands. Bas de Haan, who passed away last autumn due to a tragic bike accident on Airport Road, introduced Olympic Moves three years ago on Statia. After joining Milton Peters College as a Physical Education teacher, Bas was very eager to do the same here on Sint Maarten together with his colleague Ms. Aukje van Kuiken. Thanks to the generous support of numerous local sponsors, the MPC team is able to part take in his honour.
While in the Netherlands the students will take part in different activities relating to sports education and culture. On Tuesday the students will visit ROC Landstede in Zwolle, where they will train and play against Zwolle’s professional basketball team “The Hammers”. After which they will get a tour of the school and follow classes. ROC Landstede is a school which caters to students who are interested in a future in sports.
The students have been practicing with coach Bell since December are very excited that they are able to take part in the Olympic Moves Competition. The Olympic Moves School Final which will be held on Friday June 9th can be followed live on: Echnaton FM (radio live stream) or via the Olympic Moves App (video live stream). The team will return to St. Maarten on Sunday the June 11. Making this project possible, including: UTS, BZSE, Karakter, HBN Law, Tjong Ajong Accounting, Baker Tilly, Sint Rose Arcade and The Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports.
