ST. EUSTATIUS-- Lucky Lady crew donated their wahoo catch to St. Eustatius elderly. The catch was given to the Auxiliary Home for the elderly and the Chapel Piece Community Center.
Directress at Chapel Piece Recreational Center Cynthia Howell-Berkel and Renetta Mercurius the Head Nurse of the Auxillary Home both said they were very grateful for the donations. The Auxiliary Home takes care of those elderly who can no longer take care of themselves, serving approximately 17 individuals on the island.
Chapel Piece is a community center for the elderly that provides them with recreational activities and nutritious meals, serving approximately 35 people on site and through their meals-on-wheels program.
Twelve boats participated in the annual Saba Day Wahoo Tournament, with teams representing Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten. A team of eight sponsored by NuStar, REDS, Coulored Fin, Mazinga, Lowland International, Daynco Limited, JW van Stee BV, and Glamour Kids left Saba on Lucky Lady at two in the morning on Saturday. They headed approximately 40 miles west, or about halfway to St. Croix. The ship's Captian said that the seas were rough with swells of up to 10 feet, but he and his crew were able to safely navigate the waters while successfully trolling along the way.
The team reeled in its largest catch almost immediately, a Wahoo weighing in at 47 lbs, seven lbs larger than the team’s best catch from the previous year. While it wasn’t big enough to win, the group felt a sense of accomplishment with the 130 lbs that it hauled in. The catch included five wahoo, five barracuda (which were released), a mahi mahi, tuna, bonito, and rainbow runner.
