Local Tae kwon do athletes looking for gold in Florida

PHILIPSBURG--– Tae kwon do specialists from St. Maarten take to the international stage today at the start of a three-day tournament featuring martial artists from around the world.

Some 16 athletes of the King Yen Tae kwon do School in St. Maarten, left from the Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIAE) Wednesday, along with five coaches, to compete in the international meet following months of preparation.

Leading the team is Tae Kwon Do Grandmaster Theo Lui, who says the athletes are looking forward to their participation at the ESPN Wide World Of Sports in Walt Disney World, where they hope to win many medals.

The tournament from October 8 to October 11 features competition in forms, breakings and sparring.
