POND ISLAND--Eighteen year old The 73 to 74 Kilo boxer will climb into the ring for his first fight.
I have been training for three years,” said Duzong. “I am ready for this.” Ringside will be Stephan’s trainer and father Earl Duzong.
Stephan is a defensive fighter, said Earl. He loves to use his jab and counter.
The pair are scheduled to leave the Friendly Island today. The competition starts Wednesday.
“I will not know who I am fighting until the draw, said an excited but admittedly a little nervous Stephan. “If there are six guys in my weight class I might have to have two fights a night each of the three days of the competition. If there is only one other it is straight to the final.”
Team St. Maarten is due home Monday, July 10.
Once home despite the outcome, the Duzongs will be back in the gym preparing for their next bout September 2 in the Battle of the Islands that will be held at L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium.
Yesterday before making final preparations for the trip Stephan his father and President of the St. Maarten National Boxing Federation Shawn, The Pitbull, Blair visited the young athletes at the Little League’s Player Development Program.
Stephan told the children age 7 to 12 that it takes hard work and dedication to become a top athlete and earn the right to represent your Island.
“I really was not that good at sports confessed Stephan who attended Milton Peters College. I tried soccer but it just was not for me. Then some of my friends told me about boxing.
At first Stephan was not interested. But he gave the ring a try and now three years later he is ready for his first fight.
