MULLET BAY—Howard Hobgood bested a field of 94 to win the 24th St. Maarten Open Golf Tournament at Mullet Bay over the weekend. Hobgood carded a score of 139 for the victory. Second Low Gross was won by Scott Delong from Anguilla at 144.
Clive Youlten was the tournament’s Low Net winner with a score of 137 after the handicap adjustment. Kit Lee was Low Net winner out of the Champion Flight with a score of 138.
The nearly 100 golfers represented Anguilla, St. Kitts, USA, UK, the Netherlands, Canada, and both sides of the Friendly Island during the two day event.
The win for Hobgood marks the ninth time he has won the championship. It was the 19th time he has competed in the tournament.
“Once again the pro from Anguilla, Scott, came over and he’s a very good player,” said Hobgood. “Yesterday I was fortunate to shoot even par and have a slight lead over him but today was very close. We both shot 34 on the front and then he beat me on 10. There was just two strokes between us. We both made pars and birdies, and pars and birdies but I was able to hang on and beat him at the end.
“Two years in a row I’ve lost to Anguilla kids, so this win is very rewarding I’m 54 now and they are in their 30s. It does make a difference, they can hit the ball harder and farther.”
