PHILIPSBURG—The St. Maarten Female National Volleyball Team left the island on Wednesday for Antigua to participate and represent St. Maarten in the ECVA Female Championship tournament.
The games will be played over the weekend of August 16-19 and they will return home on the 20th. Some 7 islands within the region will be participating in this tournament namely St. Lucia, Grenada, St. Kitts / Nevis, Bermuda, French St. Martin, Dutch St. Maarten and host Antigua.
Head coach Dimitri Beauperthuy will be travelling today, Thursday. He could not travel yesterday due to the funeral of a family member. " I am proud of them all. They are prepared and they are ready," he said of the team.
The young ladies have been in training for the last 3 years, 3 nights per week. They were scheduled to travel in September last year the same week Irma devastated St. Maarten to participate in the second round of the FIVB world qualifier after placing second to Bermuda in the first round where the top two teams moved forward. Those games were hosted by St. Maarten in 2016.
