WILLEMSTAD--The host country’s four medal winners during the recent Carifta Games 2017 were honoured in Curaçao.
The annual regional youth track and field championships were held at Ergilio Hato Stadium of national sports centre SDK.
This year the coveted Austin Sealy Award went to homeboy Glenn Kunst, who broke the pole vault record, which was 4.10 metres more than six times, before ending at a new height of 4.75 metres to take the gold medal. The award was handed over by Sir Austin himself, who was present for the ceremony.
The other local winners were Jaden Bernadina in the high jump (silver), Shurianty Mathilda in the 800-metre run (bronze) and Qyone Antersijn in the 1,500-metre run (bronze).
Jamaica finished with the most medals; 86 in total. The Jamaican athletes went home with 39 gold-, 28 silver- and 19 bronze medals.
The Bahamas finished with 31 medals, while Trinidad & Tobago had 22, Barbados 12, Guyana 8, Cayman Islands 6, British Virgin Islands 6, Antigua and Barbuda 5, Martinique 5, Guadeloupe 4, Curaçao 4, Turks & Caicos 3, Grenada 2, Bermuda 2, Dominica 1, St. Kitts & Nevis 1 and French Guyana 1.
