COLE BAY--Caribbean International Academy (CIA) won the 17th annual Caribbean Gems Inter-school High Schools Meet on Sunday. The meet, hosted by Carib Swim Team (CST), was attended by four schools: CIA, Learning Unlimited (LU), Milton Peter’s College (MPC) and St. Dominic’s High School.
Each school entered full teams of 12 pupils, ages 12-20 years, from grades 7-12 who swam in 13 events. All four competitive strokes were swum during the meet; backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle over distances of 50 and 100 metres. There were also relay races; 100m boys’ and girls’ freestyle, and 100m mixed medley with 2 girls and 2 boys swimming together in a team. Each swimmer could swim 2 individual races and one relay race.
After some fierce competition, the combined team results were: first place CIA with 127 points; in second place LU with 108 points and in an unprecedented tie MPC and St. Dominic’s took third place with 91 points, so everyone was a winner. More than a couple of races were neck and neck with finishes separated by milliseconds, making for an exciting morning at the pool for swimmers and spectators alike. MPC took home the Spirit Cup for their sportsmanship and cheering supporters.
