AMSTERDAM--Ajax Amsterdam defeated Young Boys 2-0 in Switzerland to comfortably book their place in the Europa League quarter finals. Ajax went through 5-0 on aggregate.
Leading 3-0 from the first leg, Ajax went to Switzerland in a very comfortable position. Manager Erik ten Hag welcomed Daley Blind back into the line-up, but in midfield, as Edson Alvarez partnered Lisandro Martinez at the back.
Young Boys started the game brightly and Martinez had to make a good block to deny Jean-Pierre Nsame’s strike.
In the 20th minute, Ajax took the lead with Dusan Tadic setting up David Neres to score a tap-in from close range.
Young Boys screamed for a penalty in the 35th minute when the ball hit Alvarez on the arm, but VAR decided it was not a foul. Moments later, Ajax went up the other end and Nicolas Tagliafico saw a shot blocked.
A minute into the second half, Davy Klaassen missed a great chance but moments later, Ajax were awarded a penalty. A handball by Mohamed Camara was missed by Bobby Madden, but the referee then awarded it via VAR. Tadic netted from the spot to make it 2-0.
Young Boys thought they had pulled one back when Nsame headed in at the back post, but an offside Meschack Elia was interfering and the goal was disallowed by Madden after consulting VAR.
From that point, Ajax were comfortable and saw out the rest of the game to book their place in today’s, Friday’s, draw for the last eight.
