PARAMARIBO--The deaths earlier this week of a young police officer and his family have been ruled a homicide.
Donavan Amattohar (29), a police officer who served in east Paramaribo, died on Tuesday morning, together with his wife Xiomara Emid-Amattohar (24) and their two toddlers Atifa (3) and Tafiq (1) Amattohar.
Police had reported that they received the report about a house fire in Tamanredjo in District Commewijne just before daybreak Tuesday. When firefighters arrived on the scene the concrete house was engulfed in flames; all they could do was control the blaze and work toward extinguishing it. When the fire was out, the four charred remains of the young family were found among the rubble.
In a subsequent release issued on Friday, police said that the autopsies on the bodies have shown that the victims had been dead before the fire broke out. “According to the autopsy that was released on Friday, the deaths of the police officer and his family were the result of a crime,” police stated. It said investigations would continue in the case.
