HAMILTON, Bermuda--A week devoted to making sure people are ready for the hurricane season will launch next Monday.
National Security Minister Renee Ming said that the emergency broadcast service would broadcast daily lunchtime briefings until next Friday. She added that the disaster risk reduction and mitigation (DRRM) team would also organise exercises as refreshers for veterans and training for new staff with the Emergency Measures Organisation operations centre, based at Hamilton Fire Station.
Speaking in the House of Assembly last Friday, Ming said that equipment would be tested, and training given to people involved with the emergency broadcasting station. She highlighted that a variety of forecasters had predicted an above average number of storms and hurricanes over the season, which starts next Tuesday.
Ming said: “Each year during hurricane season, Bermuda has an opportunity to demonstrate its strength and resilience. I am confident that, with proper preparation, this year will be no different and that we will safely weather any storms that may test our shores. The DRRM team and the Ministry of National Security will continue its work to ensure that we are well-prepared.”
The 30-minute talks will include tips on personal and family safety, financial security, preparation of homes and how best to look out for neighbours. They will run from next Monday to Friday on the emergency broadcast network on 100.1FM. ~ The Royal Gazette ~
