PARAMARIBO--A disturbing grave robbery that was discovered on Saturday may well be even more despicable than it appeared at first. Unconfirmed reports by local newspaper Dagblad Suriname are that thieves not only stole from the grave of R.P., but also had sexual intercourse with her lifeless body.
The grave robbery was discovered by a groundskeeper at the Hodi mi kras tibi cemetery at Dr. Sophie Redmond straat in Paramaribo. What he found was appalling: the concrete plate had been removed from the tomb and the body of R.A. removed from the coffin. The 35-year-old woman had been laid to rest just the day before. Now her body was lying on the ground next to the grave, half naked.
Police confirmed the case, only saying that the coffin and body were seized and that the Capital Crimes Department is investigating. But, according to Dagblad Suriname, which quoted sources, there were indications that the grave robber was a necrophiliac; R.P.’s body was no longer wearing underwear when her corpse was found and she was probably sexually abused, the paper said.
The community has reacted with shock to the revolting find. “Not even in death people are left in peace anymore,” a family member reacted.
