Allen Chastanet
CASTRIES, St Lucia--Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet formally tendered his resignation as political leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) after the party’s crushing defeat in the 2025 General Election. The UWP secured only one seat, Chastenet’s seat in Micoud South, in the December 1 poll. The St. Lucia Labour Party won 14 seats, with the remaining two going to independent candidates aligned with the government bench.
The UWP confirmed the resignation in a December 5 press release saying, “During the course of the [strategic] meeting, the Chairman of the United Workers Party, Therold Prudent, formally advised the gathering that he received a letter from the Political Leader Allen Chastanet, in which Chastanet tenders his resignation as Political Leader of the United Workers Party.
It is to be formally tabled for consideration by the National Executive at its next scheduled meeting during the second week of December 2025. “The United Workers Party remains committed to transparency, democratic processes, and the continued advancement of its mission in service to the people of St. Lucia.”
Several political observers placed responsibility for the party’s performance squarely at Chastanet’s feet, noting that it was the second consecutive landslide loss under his leadership, following a similar humbling in 2021.
