Airlines and wheelchair assistance

Dear Editor,

I wish to bring to your attention an injustice that was done to me while checking in to travel to Curaçao on Z AIR.

As a frequent flyer who is obviously disabled, I requested the assistance of a wheelchair to aid me to board the aircraft, and was promptly told that there was a fee of US $50 for the use of the wheelchair. I was shocked, as I have never heard of this type of fee before, so I did my research.

Airlines operating out of Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) do not charge passengers for the use of a wheelchair or for wheelchair assistance. This service is provided free of charge, but it must be requested through the airline, not the airport.

What the sources confirm:

*Princess Juliana International Airport SXM states that wheelchair assistance is arranged through the airlines as part of their accessibility services, with no mention of fees. This implies the service is standard and included.

*Airlines serving SXM follow international accessibility regulations (U.S. DOT, EU 1107/2006, ICAO), which prohibit charging passengers for mobility assistance, including wheelchairs, airport escorts, or boarding lifts.

How it works at SXM:

*You request wheelchair service when booking or at least 48 hours before travel.

*The airline provides:

*Wheelchair at check-in

*Assistance through security and immigration

*Priority boarding

*Assistance on arrival and baggage claim

*The airport provides accessible facilities, but the airline provides the personnel and equipment.

Important clarifications:

*Your personal wheelchair (manual or electric) is transported free of charge as mobility equipment.

*Airlines may ask for advance notice for power wheelchairs due to battery handling rules.

*If you need wheelchair service between the aircraft and terminal, this is also free.

The bottom line is:

No airline operating out of St. Maarten is allowed to charge you for wheelchair assistance or for transporting your wheelchair. However, I wish to point out, that on my return trip to St. Maarten I was NOT CHARGED this fee.

I shall be taking this matter up with the appropriate authorities

Sincerely,

Julian Rollocks
