VKS conducts criminal law refresher course

MADAME ESTATE--Members of the Volunteer Corps VKS were given a refresher class in criminal law and procedures by guest instructor Michael Cornet of the Justice Academy on Sunday. Members undergo various types of training on weekends as part of their commitment to serve the country.

The class consisting of 35 members was especially important because of the ongoing assistance projects for both the prison and for police patrols in Philipsburg, where they must be knowledgeable in laws and legal processes. The weekend classes are an obligation for members to attend, and range from theoretical classes such as this one to practical physical trainings, marksmanship, and community service.

VKS currently has 80 members, 50 of whom are active. Residents who are interested in joining the VKS can apply to be in the next eight-month training regiment that is expected to start in January. Applicants must be in good health, age 17 or over, with a high school degree or equivalent as minimum educational requirement, and possess a Dutch passport. All are subject to an in-depth police background check, general knowledge test, and a physical entrance test.

Applications are available at the VKS office on Guadeloupe Road, Madame Estate, during office hours or via e-mail at
