Union Central not in political actions

WUILLEMSTAD--“Central General di Trahadornan di Corsow” (CGTC) will not participate in any politically motivated actions, Secretary General Wendy Calmes told an extraordinary council meeting of the labour union central. He said nobody favours austerity measures certainly at this time, however, “something has to happen” if Curaçao is to pull out of the current crisis.

“Some are yelling that government must go home, but what happens then? You exchange one group of politicians with another. Experience shows they will do the same and that is not the solution we need now,” added Calmes.

He called for creative thinking and alternative approaches such as redeveloping the once bustling centre of the capital Willemstad. “There are shopping malls all over where people can park for free, but downtown they have to pay. As far as I’m concerned make the whole inner-city duty free.” The other union central “Sentral di Sindikatonan di Kòrsou” (SSK) will meet with its 11 affiliated unions Tuesday, to determine a position on the Rhuggenaath Cabinet’s plans. They have already indicated that there must be clarity on the future of the Isla refinery before anything else.
