Two New Year’s Day babies born at SMMC

CAY HILL--Two sets of parents received the perfect New Year’s Day gift when their baby boys entered their families on the first day of the 2018.

Both babies were delivered by obstetrician/gynaecologist Dr. Patricia Roumans at St Maarten Medical Centre (SMMC). The first bouncing bundle of joy named Thiago Yael Caines was born at 3:58am on New Year’s Day. His parents Vincent Caines and Caines were super-excited about his arrival.
Vincent told The Daily Herald his son originally had been due to be born on December 29, but Mother Nature had different plans. The baby weighed 7 pounds 5 ounces at birth and was delivered through natural birth.
His parents said they feel “immensely happy about the arrival of our son. He is a blessing for our home and we expected it with all our love. We thought he would be born on December 28, as a gift of our 10th wedding anniversary, but God sent it at the right time that he had to arrive.”
The second baby, De’sjon Labasti, was delivered at 4:20pm, weighing 5 pounds, 8 ounces and measuring 50 centimetres in length. His parents Sheldon Labasti and Davila Smith could not be happier with their first child together. The baby was originally due on January 13. This is Daddy's first child, Mommy's second.
“I was admitted on December 31 due to pain and my water broke 10:30am on January 1, 2018. They gave me a few hours for nature to do its thing, but unfortunately, I was having some complications and that's when my gynaecologist Dr. Roumans decided to do a C-section,” the happy mother said. “We feel very blessed to have gotten our bundle of joy on this day – a day which brings new hope, new beginnings, fresh blessings and a fresh start, according to most.”
