The first supermoon of the year on Monday night shimmers over the De Weever Estate historical house in Dutch Quarter as the St. Maarten tradition of putting bits of the Christmas tree to the flames, in this instance in an old boiling pot, is ongoing. A “supermoon” occurs when the moon becomes full on the same day it reaches its perigee, the point in the moon’s elliptical orbit when it is closest to Earth. Monday’s “wolf moon” will be followed by another full moon on January 31. A second full moon in one month is called a “blue moon.” Two full moons in one month occurs about once every 2½ years.
