MARIGOT--President of St. Martin Tourism Office Valérie Damaseau and Director Aïda Weinum paid tribute to former President of the Marigot Merchants Association René Mathon who passed away last week.

“We learnt with deep sadness of the death of René Mathon. He was a larger than life figure in St. Martin, a successful and passionate entrepreneur who made a huge contribution to developing our economy,” their release stated. “The success of his jewellery store with the Carat brand was a fine example of local economic development. He went on to organise popular events around trade and tourism which have contributed to the island’s economy and tourism development.

“He loved people and loved being useful to serve the economy of the island he loved. He was a member of the Executive Board of the Tourism Office and was particularly attentive to the interests and concerns of the merchants that led to him holding the position of President of the Merchants’ Association for several years.

“René Mathon was a great professional, a fine example to all. He will remain in the hearts of all those who love St. Martin and work for the development of the island. At this difficult time, the President of the Tourism Office, Director, and all the staff of the Tourism Office express their deepest condolences to his family, relatives and everyone affected by this loss.”
