PHILIPSBURG--Police are investigating another armed robbery; this time at Divinitii Jewelers on Front Street which was targeted by three men who stormed into the business at approximately 10:45am Monday.
The men went straight for the display cases, smashing them open with a heavy object. They filled their bags with jewellery and ran out of the store. Police were alerted to the situation and rushed to the location. According to witnesses, the robbers were on foot.
Police spotted one of the robbers in the Groensteeg alley between Back Street and Cannegieter Street close to Kennedy Photo Studio. Police spokesman Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson said in the daily police report that while police approached the scene, three unknown men with their faces covered were seen running away from the scene.
“The police summoned these men to stop, but they refused to do so. Several warning shots were then fired by police. One of the suspects surrendered while the others continued running away. This suspect was immediately arrested while a search for the other two continued.
“During the arrest of the suspect items stolen from the jewellery store were recovered. A vehicle which would probably be used as an escape vehicle was also confiscated. The suspect was taken to the Philipsburg police station where he remains in custody for questioning,” said Henson.
An unknown masked man entered the same jewellery store at 10:45am Monday, September 5, 2016, and stole a considerable amount of gold jewellery. He threatened the workers with a firearm he had in his possession. After committing this act the suspect fled on foot. This suspect is still at large, according to police.
The search continues for the remaining suspects from Monday’s robbery and the police are asking anyone who may have information regarding this robbery to immediately get in contact with the Detective Department by calling 542-2222 ext. 213/214, the police anonymous tip line 9300 or the Emergency Dispatch 911.
