The sky over Great Bay was illuminated with colourful fireworks at the stroke of midnight

The sky over Great Bay was illuminated with colourful fireworks at the stroke of midnight to usher in 2019. The huge bursts of colours and shapes awed onlookers on Boardwalk Boulevard and in neighbourhoods surrounding the bay. Cruise ship “Club Med II” remained in port until 1:00am allowing cruisers to celebrate the New Year in St. Maarten The 10-minute display sponsored by Port St. Maarten signalled a return to more normality just over a year after monster Hurricane Irma. There were no fireworks over the bay to ring in 2018. The Port wanted to make sure there was a grand display after the one-year hiatus. Fireworks also returned to Maho Bay with the reopening of Sonesta Ocean Point in December 2018. Several other smaller fireworks displays were seen throughout the island.
