PHILIPSBURG--Beyond Kultura Events (BKE) Foundation will be starting its Storytelling Workshop next week Friday, March 22.
The March 22-24 weekend workshop begins with theoretical sessions on Friday, March 22, 6:00-8:00pm, and on Saturday, and Sunday, March 23 and 24, 12:00-4:00pm.
Workshop participants will learn the basic skills of storytelling, including puppet-show techniques. Teachers and facilitators of the weekend training are author and storyteller Diana Lebacs and BKE president and author Loekie Morales. Practical classes will be given April to June.
BKE has engaged 10 primary schools, two community centres, some afternoon schools and a children’s home to participate in this project. Candidate storytellers will tell stories to these children.
Enthusiastic potential storytellers received information about the ins and outs and requirements to become a certificated storyteller, during an information session held last week Friday.
“We are in need of two coachers with knowledge about storytelling to visit the storytellers and judge them based on our criteria to be certificated. Children are participating for free. We are most happy that we can kick off next week.
“The financial support of Prince Bernhard Cultural Fund Caribbean, the Dutch Language Union and the Collaborative Funds has made this possible. They are helping us out to put happy smiles on the faces of so many children in St. Maarten,” Morales stated.
