ST. EUSTATIUS--Firefighter’s Week closed Friday, May 21, with the Caribbean Netherlands Fire Department in St. Eustatius hosting three primary schools.

Children of Bethel Methodist, Golden Rock Roman Catholic and Lynch Plantation/Seventh-Day Adventist Schools and their teachers were driven in the fire truck with sirens blaring and the firefighters on board. The pupils were also shown around the fire station’s facilities.

There were various demonstrations of equipment used at the fire station and when an emergency takes place and the firefighters need to be on the go. The demonstrations included how to adequately put on a fire suit and gear, fire truck maintenance, how to use breathing apparatus, and how to make sure the fire truck is ready to go at a moment’s notice.

The schoolchildren were also shown how firefighters conduct other duties in the community, such as in using the jaws-of-life machine when a victim is trapped inside a vehicle and has to be cut out, as well as safety measures during an aircraft emergency.

The young children were engaged and excited to learn about what firefighters do on a daily basis.
