BELAIR--The stage is set for Sunday’s finals in the Spelling Bee organised by Rotary-Rotaract Mid-isle and sponsored by Scotiabank. Five pupils will go head-to-head to determine who will be the top winner of this year’s competition.
The finals take place at the Belair Community Centre and will start promptly at 1:00pm, according to organisers. Everyone is asked to be on time and participants should be there at least a half-hour before the event begins.
In the preliminary round participants had to write selected words, but in the semi-finals they had to stand in front of the audience and the judges and speak into a microphone spelling their selected words. Each participant had to spell 15 words, each worth five points. At the end of the semi-finals there was no tie, but it was a tight finish according to organisers.
The finalists from four schools are Dhiren Punjabi – Learning Unlimited Preparatory School; Lavanya Budhwani – Methodist Agogic Centre Browlia F. Maillard Campus; D’shenay Gayle – Methodist Agogic Centre Rev. John A. Gumbs Campus; and Suhani Nathumel and Syandra Caesar – St. Dominic Primary School.
Family, friends, classmates and teachers are invited to come out to support and cheer on the five finalists, as there will be a prize for the school with the largest number of supporters. There is also a 40-inch TV being raffled.
Fifteen semi-finalists competed at the Belair Community Centre this past Sunday. The entire event takes place over a span of three Sundays. Organisers appreciate the participation of all schools that took part in the competition this year.
The 15 semi-finalists, from eight schools, were Radharoni Natram – Hillside Christian Schools Asha Stevens Campus; Dhiren Punjabi and Krishang Motwani – Learning Unlimited Preparatory School; Lavanya Budhwani, Rianna Ayoka Roberts and Sacha Tobias ¬– Methodist Agogic Centre Browlia Maillard Campus; D’shenay Gayle and Vinti Atmaramani – Methodist Agogic Centre Rev. John A. Gumbs Campus; Varsha Ghanash – Seventh-Day Adventist School; Aman Sukhani, Suhani Nathumal and Syandra Caesar – St. Dominic School; Bani Rajpal and Denny Mo – St. Joseph School; and Steven Connor – Adrian T. Hazel School in Anguilla.
