CUL DE SAC--The St. Maarten Police Force KPSM responded to a traffic accident near the Churchill roundabout in Cul de Sac around 10:00pm Saturday, in which a speeding Hyundai Elantra collided head-on with a Kia Rio. The accident caused significant damage to both vehicles and a streetlight.

According to police, the driver of the Hyundai Elantra – a man J.C.L. (32) – was travelling at a “very high speed” on L.B. Scott Road heading toward the Churchill roundabout. He lost control of his vehicle around the L.B. Scott Road/Sugar Hill Drive junction, slid towards the roundabout and hit an oncoming Kia Rio head-on.

The collision also caused the Kia Rio driver to lose control of their vehicle, which resulted in the car knocking over a streetlight and ending up in the middle of the roundabout.

Despite both vehicles being severely damaged, the drivers luckily sustained only minor injuries.

“It is imperative that the St. Maarten Police Force, once again, inform the general public of the necessity to be cautious on the roadways. Remember, the life that you save might be your own. Unnecessary, excessive speeding can lose you or another road user their life,” said police in a press release on Monday night.
