SMMC urologists perform complex surgical procedure

CAY HILL--Urologists at St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) recently performed the complex “Laparoscopic Nephrectomy” surgical procedure at the medical institution.

Dr. Diego Ramos and Dr. Carlos Rojas performed the minimally invasive surgery together which can be used to remove all or part of a kidney. One of the main benefits of the Laparoscopic Nephrectomy is that it yields significantly less post-operative pain and shorter hospital stays for patients, SMMC said in a press release on Friday.

“This is due to the fact that the surgery requires only several small incisions in the abdomen. Through these incisions the urologists are able to use specialized surgical instruments to perform the procedure.

Rojas: “This technique has become a standard within the field of Urology over the past years, and thus we are happy to carry out this procedure within our department. This allows us to provide our patients at SMMC with the best possible treatment options as we continue to expand our services,” he said.

This marks the first time that the hospital provided such treatment options within its roster of care. These new advancements in the Urology Department further underline SMMC’s objective to provide quality care close to home, SMMC said.
