Silvio Matser to declare himself independent MP

~Lake not happy with UP~

PHILIPSBURG--United People’s (UP) party Member of Parliament (MP) Silvio Matser announced on Wednesday that he will be “drawing a line in the sand” and will be declaring himself as an Independent MP.

Matser made the surprise announcement during a parliamentary meeting, in which a no-confidence motion was passed against the Gumbs-Cabinet, with his support. “I can’t take the abuse internally anymore. I can’t take this,” Matser said in announcing his decision.

UP MP Maurice Lake said in the same meeting that he was unhappy with the stagnation of progress on the island and his desire to see the country “get back to basics.”

Lake said since he demited office as Minister little has been done for the people of St. Maarten. He said the Dutch should not stop St. Maarten from moving forward and executing projects for the people of St. Maarten. “We need to get back to basics and bring back stability, improve marketing and protecting and creating jobs,” Lake said.
