Senior Carnival Queen vies in Nevis pageant

PHILIPSBURG--Senior Carnival Queen Phausha Winklaar will compete in the Ms. Caribbean Culture Queen Pageant tonight, August 3, in her capacity as Miss St. Maarten, as part of Nevis’ Culturama festival. This will be the first time she represents St. Maarten abroad.

Winklaar was sent off with best wishes by sponsors Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication (TEATT) Claret Connor and Windward Islands Airways International Winair.

A regular supporter of St. Maarten Carnival, Winair sponsored the airfare for Winklaar and three of her team members. She paid a courtesy visit to Winair last week and was greeted by Marketing Coordinator Helena de Bekker and Executive Assistant Alejandro Sutton.

“The nation will be rooting for her on Monday night,” Minister Connor said on Sunday via press release. “One can expect that she is feeling anxious to compete, but at the same time also excited. We know she will do a great job in representing St. Maarten as an ambassador and making our country proud.”

Other participants hail from Antigua, Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis and St. Lucia.
