Second arrest in cop’s shooting, hospitalised suspect a singer

SUCKER GARDEN--A second person was arrested in Sucker Garden on Friday as a “possible suspect” in the investigation into the shooting of bike patrol Police Officer Gamali “Benji” Benjamin.

Police spokesperson Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson and Press Prosecutor Karola van Nie confirmed that a person had been arrested. However, Henson said the person detained was a possible suspect in the investigations and was not the second man who was directly involved in Wednesday’s tragic incident that resulted in the shooting of Officer Benjamin.

Henson said the person who had been involved directly in the incident on Wednesday was still on the loose and still was being sought by authorities.

The Justice Ministry has put up a US $10,000 reward for information that would lead directly to the arrest of this person.

The person arrested in the matter on Wednesday is said to be a 23-year-old budding musician who goes by the artiste name Kilo Gotti. He also is known by the alias Kilo Gram. The police and Prosecutor’s Office gave his initials as R.D. in a joint statement on Thursday and said he had been shot in the stomach and left leg and had been recuperating at St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC).

Kilo Gotti was featured in an earlier issue of The Daily Herald’s Out ’N About when he released his first official single “Represent.” His manager had told this newspaper at the time that the single was on Kilo Gotti’s mix-tape “Muscle of the Empire.” The manager had said the mix-tape as well as the song “Represent” told “the story” of the artiste’s life and about his growing up as a teenager.

“I had to represent to become who I am today. ‘Represent’ is all about any individual who represents their dreams or goals. In life you have to represent every day to prove why you are the best at what you do. Most importantly, the song ‘Represent’ is shouting out and showing respect to ... friends and family whom Kilo Gotti saw growing up as a teenager, representing who became and are still successful in life,” Kilo Gotti had said at the time.

The 23-year-old is the father of one. Ironically, his manager had said at the time that the singer encouraged others not to repeat their mistakes and to be better persons.

The suspect was said to have been singing since his early teenage years and had said the name Kilo Gotti represented his “struggle.”
