ST.  PETERS--The St. Maarten Police Force’s KPSM’s Traffic Department is investigating a serious traffic accident involving a private vehicle and a scooter which took place on L.B. Scott Road near Emilio Wilson Park around 7:30pm Saturday.

According to a police press release, a man was riding a pink and black scooter with licence plate number MF-53 on L.B. Scott Road from Saunders toward John Cooper/Jose Lake Sr. Ballpark.

While overtaking a vehicle on the bridge by Emilio Wilson Park, the scooter driver lost control and collided head-on with a private vehicle with licence plate number P-6544 coming from the opposite direction.

As a result of the collision the scooter driver suffered a broken leg and fractured bones in his face. He was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel and was transported to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for further treatment.

The rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, said police on Monday.

“The wearing of a helmet while riding a scooter or a motorcycle is required by law. The wearing of a helmet is to minimise the severity of head injuries if an accident occurs while operating these vehicles. Because the rider of this scooter was not wearing a helmet during this accident, he suffered severe head trauma as a result of the impact,” said police.

The police are urging scooter and motorcycle riders and passengers to wear safety helmets when travelling on these vehicles, as required by law.
