PHILIPSBURG--The Traffic Department of the St. Maarten Police Force KPSM is investigating a traffic accident involving a truck and a scooter which took place on Coralita Road around noon Thursday.

According to police, a man was riding a black Yamaha X-max scooter with licence plate MF-13 on Coralita Road in the direction of Betty’s Estate. While overtaking several cars, the scooter rider collided with a truck with licence plate number P-8431, which was also travelling toward Betty’s Estate and was in the process of making a left turn into a driveway. The truck driver had indicated the turn, said police.

The scooter rider suffered head injuries and contusions to his body as a result of the collision. He was treated at the scene by Ambulance Department personnel and was later transported to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for further treatment. He was not wearing a helmet when he hit the truck, said police.

“The wearing of a helmet is to minimise the severity of head injuries in the event an accident occurs while operating these [type of – Ed.] vehicles. The St. Maarten Police Force is again urging all scooter or motorcycle riders and passengers to wear a helmet when using these vehicles, as required by law and for your own wellbeing,” said police in a press release on Friday.
