SURFACE WINDS:
This afternoon through Monday midday: East to southeast with a light to gentle breeze of 04 to 09 miles per hour, becoming variable and calm at times.
SYNOPSIS:
Despite the presence of a tropical wave, low moisture levels in the atmosphere will decrease the probability of showers as the wave moves across the region. Meanwhile, a weakened Atlantic high pressure system will maintain mostly light winds.
Seas are expected to peak near 4 feet through the next few days.
STATE OF THE SEA: Slight WAVES/SWELLS: 3 to 4 feet
SPECIAL FEATURE: At 11:00 am today, the center of catastrophic (cat 5) Hurricane Dorian causing cataclysmic conditions in the Abacos Islands. Dorian poses no threat to St. Maarten.
A broad area of low pressure associated with a tropical wave is located about 2605 miles east-southeast of St Maarten. This system has become better organized since yesterday and environmental conditions appear conducive for additional development during the next several days. A tropical depression is likely to form by the middle of the week while the system moves generally northwestward across the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean. Heavy rainfall is possible over portions of the southern Cabo Verde Islands during the next couple of days. Interests on those islands should monitor the progress of this system. This system is not forecast to pose a threat to St Maarten.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...50 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...high...70 percent.
OUTLOOK through Tuesday midday: Fair to partly cloudy and slight haze with a brief local shower possible.
