This afternoon through Sunday midday: Partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated showers and isolated thunderstorms.

SURFACE WINDS: 

This afternoon through Sunday midday: Northeast to east with a light to moderate breeze of 06 to 14 miles per hour.

SYNOPSIS:  

An approaching tropical wave will bring moisture and instability to the region. As a result, an increase in cloudiness and shower activity with isolated thunderstorms are expected during this forecast period.

Seas are expected to remain slight to moderate through today. Thereafter, a rapid increase in wave period is expected. Consequently, marine conditions will become rough. Small craft operators and sea bathers should exercise caution and keep updated as advisories may be issued.

SPECIAL FEATURE:

….Irma moving westward across the Atlantic as a small hurricane….

At 11:00 am Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 18.8 north, longitude 43.3 west or about 1300 miles east of St. Maarten. Irma is moving toward the west at 15 mph (24km/h) and is expected to turn toward the west-southwest at a slightly slower rate of speed during the next two days.

Maximum sustained winds are near 110 mph (175 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours.

Irma is a small hurricane. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km).

The Meteorological Department of St. Maarten (MDS) will continue to monitor the progress of Irma. Members of the public are advised to monitor the updates on this system. Additionally, all preparations should be made in the event Irma does make landfall.
