Police catch man who attempted to flee by plunging in water, swimming away

PHILIPSBURG--A man who had an outstanding warrant for ill-treating his spouse and “abducting” their child was arrested by police on Thursday after a failed attempt to swim away from the pursuing officers.

Police said in a press release on Friday that the police patrol unit had apprehended and arrested the suspect D.R.F. (29) in the vicinity of Bobby’s Marina thanks to the assistance of public-spirited citizens.

The man was wanted in connection with the ill-treatment of his spouse and abduction of their child without the mother’s permission. When he spotted officers approaching him, the man jumped into the water at Bobby’s Marina and proceeded to swim away.

With the assistance of men with a boat, officers were able to capture the suspect from the water and place him under arrest. He was taken to the Philipsburg police station for further questioning.

The Police Force said it can better serve the community with the help of residents. “We continue to encourage the community to give a helping hand when (and) if necessary. If you see something, say or do something,” the release said.
