Parties debate Sunday about independence

POND ISLAND--Five of the nine political parties contesting the September, 26 Parliamentary Elections will participate in a public debate about independence for the country from the Dutch Kingdom at the University of St. Martin (USM) on Sunday starting at 8:00pm.

All nine parties contesting the elections were invited by organiser Independence for St. Martin Foundation (ISMF) to send representatives to the debate, but only five responded and will be represented by the party leader or another candidate.

The quest for Independence continues to be a transcendental issue that won’t go away, the foundation stated. "It is therefore crucial to hear the positions of the various political parties that are seeking the support of the electorate on such an important matter."

Immigration, campaign financing, St. Martin identity, education and new economic opportunities will also be among the debate issues.

The public is invited to the debate.
