PHILIPSBURG--A man was severely injured when he lost control of his vehicle on W.J.A. Nisbeth Road (Pondfill) in the early morning hours of Saturday, October 19.

According to police, the man was travelling toward Bush Road. He was speeding and lost control, hitting the corner of a food truck and crashing into the establishment’s food preparation area. Prior to crashing, the driver overtook three cars and a trailer truck, said police. No other vehicles were involved in this accident.

Police have confirmed that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol.

The driver of the trailer truck was one of the first persons on the scene. He and several other bystanders removed debris from around the damaged vehicle so emergency responders could access the injured driver more effectively. One of the establishment’s barbeque grills went through the car’s windshield as a result of the crash and was lying in the passenger seat next to the driver.

The man sustained severe face and head trauma in the accident. He was treated at the scene by personnel of the Ambulance Department and transported to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for further treatment. He was later flown abroad to receive additional medical care. The Daily Herald understands that he was taken to the Cayman Islands.

As of Sunday night, police said the man was in critical but stable condition.
