BONAIRE--The number of people on Bonaire infected with the coronavirus has grown significantly over the first few days of 2021.

On December 31, there were still 13 active cases and 61 people in quarantine, but by January 3, this had increased to respectively 58 and 151. There is also now a person with COVID-19 in the hospital.

Since Sunday, new, stricter corona rules again apply on the island. For example, private gatherings with more than ten people are not allowed, and bar/restaurants may only use up to 50 per cent of the capacity, with a maximum of fifty guests. They must also close at ten o'clock in the evening.

The limit of half the capacity also applies to churches. Singing together is prohibited and everyone must go home after the service.

Gambling halls, casinos and cinemas may remain open until midnight at the latest, but food and drinks can only be served until 10pm.

Discotheques and adult clubs must remain closed.

Since March of last year, the island Bonaire had three corona patients die, while 156 recovered. According to government, many infections take place in the family sphere.
