Man shot in back during attempt to steal his chain

NAZARETH--A man was shot in his back while he was fleeing to safety after a brazen attempt by two armed men to steal his gold chain in Nazareth in the wee hours of Monday, July 13.

The victim told police he had been sitting in a car when he suddenly was attacked by two armed men who attempted to rob him of his gold chain. A struggle ensued, but the victim managed to free himself from the robbers' grip and ran towards his car that was parked nearby. It was at this time that he was shot in his back.

The man told police he had driven himself home. He subsequently was transported to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC).

Acting police spokesperson Inspector Steven Carty said in a press release on Thursday that the victim has since been released from hospital.

The call about the incident was made to the Police Dispatch around 5:00am on July 13. Carty said police patrols had been on their way to the scene in Nazareth when they were redirected to SMMC because the victim already had been transported there. On their arrival the victim already had been taken to the operating room, but was in stable condition.

Carty said the investigation into this incident was ongoing and updates would be given in a subsequent report.
