Man arrested for bomb threat

PHILIPSBURG--A British citizen B.A.R. (42) was arrested directly after his arrival in St. Maarten on December 25, according to police.

Police had received a bomb threat targeting Pink Iguana restaurant opposite Princess Juliana International Airport SXM on November 22. The suspect departed from the island on November 23, but could be identified.

Police spokesman Ricardo Henson said, “These threats caused extra police work, disruption of airline flight schedules, traffic congestions and unnecessary discomfort for travellers. These kinds of threats are negative to the tourist economy of St. Maarten and are considered serious crimes that are investigated with priority.”

The arrest was made thanks to the cooperation of the Detective Department and Information unit of the St. Maarten Police Force, telecom providers TelEm and UTS, and the security departments of the airport and KLM/Air France.

The suspect is currently in detention and will be led before the Judge of Instruction today, Monday.
