Long-time union leader Elshot arrested Monday

PHILIPSBURG--Windward Islands Teachers Union (WITU) President Claire Elshot and her son V.E. were arrested by police at their home in Cole Bay on Monday afternoon.

Elshot is suspected of defamation of character and obstruction of justice. Her son was the first to be arrested, for threatening a neighbour.

The Daily Herald understands that Elshot and a nearby neighbour have been arguing for some time about allegedly illegal construction taking place around their properties. An all-out argument took place again and Elshot’s son threatened the neighbour in person and on social media.

These reports could not be confirmed by acting police spokesman Inspector Steven Carty on Monday evening.

“All I can say is that Elshot and her son were arrested on Monday. The details surrounding the arrests will be given on Tuesday, but Elshot interfered while police were arresting her son. That is all I can say for now,” Carty told this newspaper.
