PHILIPSBURG--A delegation that included Justice Minister Cornelius de Weever and Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin visited Postal Services St. Maarten (PSS) on Tuesday to observe the working conditions and to “better understand the severity of the financial situation that PSS finds itself in,” following an introductory meeting to assess PSS’ current state.
Romeo-Marlin said PSS management and the St. Maarten Communications Union (SMCU) are on the same page, which she called “a positive sign.”
“We are all fully aware that postal services as a business is no longer viable locally and internationally and, to add insult to injury, the building was severely damaged by Hurricane Irma. Thus, an innovative and effective financial solution must be put together quickly. In the short term the Government of St. Maarten continues to support PSS in its efforts to keep its postal and other services to the public functioning,” Romeo-Marlin said.
She thanked the PSS staff for “working under such deplorable conditions” and pledged Government’s commitment to come to an amicable solution “that takes into consideration all parties involved. The present situation is truly unacceptable, and something must be done sooner than later.”
