GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten--The Inspectorate of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Traffic and Telecommunications via its Section Economic Control, has commenced with its control programme for weights and measures for 2016.
Beginning this week, the Economic Controllers are visiting all the pharmacies on the island to verify if their scales are properly calibrated in order for them to conduct their business of weighing medicines according to a prescription. This control by the Inspectorate is stipulated in article 19 of the National Ordinance on the Verification of Weights and Measures AB 2013GT no.446.
The following are subject to verification or re-verification: measures, weights, measuring and weighing instruments which are intended for or used to conduct business; the determination of size or weight for the purpose of conducting business; delivery of supplies, establishing of fees or wages based on size or weight.
The Economic Control Section and its Controllers will continue throughout the remainder of the year conducting controls on all businesses selling goods to the public based on weight or size to ensure compliance, protect the interests of the consumer and the business owner, and to ensure free and unhindered trade.
The Inspectorate would like to advise all businesses that it is prohibited by law to sell, offer for sale, to rent or hire as part of conducting business in weights, measures, weighing or measuring machines that have not been calibrated or re-calibrated, and have received either an approval seal or declaration statement from the Inspectorate on behalf of government.
