In the highest echelons

Four canvases by young St. Maarten artist Leola Cotton are on display in Parliament House and will continue to grace the walls until March 2019. The paintings are titled “White Lady of The Street,” “The Gathering,” “Life” and “Upside Down Faces.” Cotton’s interest started at an early age in the form of sketching cartoon characters.

She associates art with freedom and it is a medium through which she seeks rejuvenation and contact with her inner feelings to coax them onto her predominately abstract canvases. After a hiatus from painting, she recently took up the brush again and is channelling her connection with art by launching The New Way Foundation and School of Arts. The walls of Parliament House are adorned with paintings by a featured artist twice a year. Past artists were Lucinda “La Rich” Audain, Roberto Arrindell and Roland Richardson.
