Heavy rainfall advisory in effect until 8:00pm

AIRPORT--A heavy rainfall advisory was issued in a Special Bulletin for St. Maarten by the Meteorology Department at 11:00am. The advisory remains in effect until 8:00pm. A Heavy Rainfall Advisory is an announcement when heavy rains are about to occur or occurring already, but are not strong enough to require a warning.

The advisory was issued due to an area of convection associated with a tropical wave is propagating toward St Maarten. Based on satellite data, this will likely produce periods of heavy showers, along with scattered thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Due to already saturated soils from recent rainfall, flooding, rock fall and/or landslides remain a threat in vulnerable areas. Residents and motorists in these areas are advised to exercise caution when in these areas and/or avoid them whenever possible, said the Met Department.

A Special Bulletin is issued for weather events that are unusual, cause general inconvenience or public concern (requiring the attention and/or action of fire department and police authorities) and cannot adequately be described in a regular weather forecast.
