GEBE says post about power plant shutdown is fake

PHLIPDSBURG--Utilities company GEBE said on Monday that a What’sApp message and Facebook post that has been circulating, indicating that the power plant will be shutting down as of Tuesday, April 7, is fake and false news.

The inaccurate report claimed that GEBE workers would be shutting the control room at the power plant due to unfair treatment by the company’s management.

“NV GEBE hereby informs the general public that the WhatsApp message/Facebook posts that are currently being circulated stating that the power plant will be shutting down as of tomorrow April 7, 2020, is false/fake news,” GEBE said in response. “We are thankful to our staff who continue to work during this pandemic and GEBE remains committed to the community of St. Maarten,” the government-owned company added.
