Fire at Cay Bay power plant disrupts GEBE on Saturday

CAY BAY--The Fire Department reported on Saturday that there was a fire at the NV GEBE Power Plant in Cay Bay. The Fire was extinguished and the engineers at NV GEBE started to assess the situation.

A press release from NV GEBE on Sunday stated that “at approximately 4:50pm on Saturday March 5, a fire broke out in one of the engine rooms whereby the Fire Department was called to the Power Plant.”

Reports indicated that the operator on duty informed Power Plant Manager Kenrick Chittick that one of the diesel generators was on fire. The fire was too large for the technicians to control, resulting in the fire brigade being called in to extinguish the blaze.

With swift work from NV GEBE technicians and fire fighters, the flames were contained and limited to only one engine.

After the fire was extinguished and inspections were carried out, technicians observed that the fuel injection pump had two broken bolts. The fuel that sprays from the connection point caused the fire to ignite. The damage to the engine was limited and work to repair the damaged equipment is ongoing.

Due to the blaze, power supply was temporarily interrupted to several districts on Saturday. The first cable was de-energized around 4:45pm and all cables were re-energized at 6:25pm, restoring power to all customers in under three hours. NV GEBE technicians indicated that limited damage was done to the engine and there will be no need for load-shedding during the week unless something else occurs on one of its larger engines, stated the press release.

NV GEBE spokesperson said that “no one was hurt or injured as a result of the incident” and “the company is thankful to the workers of the Power Plant and the Fire Department for their assistance.”
