Ferryboat service to Pinel Island resumes

Ferryboat captains resumed taking passengers to Pinel Island after they staged a strike for three days in protest at the Gendarmerie control that took place on Monday, on the orders of the Prosecutor. The Prosecutor stated, “Boats were being overloaded with passengers, insufficient lifejackets on board and receipts not given.” Two boats were seized during the control, but later returned after verification. The captains said the control was inappropriate and contrary to the territory’s efforts to bring back tourism. They demanded a meeting with President Gibbs or Préfète Sylvie Feucher. It was understood a meeting had been arranged with President Gibbs. Photo by Robert Luckock.
