Escaped prisoner shot dead

PORT OF SPAIN--Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) are reporting that early Sunday morning they discovered the body of Hassan Atwell, one of the men who shot their way out of Port of Spain Prison on Friday. However, Head of Corporate Communications in the Police Service, Ellen Lewis has denied that police were involved in Atwell's killing.

Police said they got reports of shooting around 12:30am and when IATF arrived they found the bullet-riddled body of Hassan Atwell.

Atwell (41), Christopher “Monster” Selby (30), and Allan “Scanny” Martin (42) staged a daring armed escape from the Frederick Street prison. Martin was one of the men on trial for the kidnap and murder of Xtra Foods owner Vindra Naipaul-Coolman. Martin was shot dead during the escape on Friday.

Selby remains at large. He too was in prison on murder charges.

Armed with two pistols and a hand grenade, the prisoners had ordered the prison gate opened, and escaped in a four-wheel-drive Nissan Navara, which had been parked outside. In the ensuing chase and shootout with police Martin was shot dead near the Port of Spain General Hospital.

A police officer, Constable Sherman Maynard (27) was also killed in the fracas. ~Trinidad Guardian~
