PHILIPSBURG--Founder of Phenomenal Girls Society and the Johnny Caker, Charity Cantave-Sam, will represent St. Maarten at the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI), in Washington from September 19 to October 24.

The annual US funded fellowship was launched in 2016 by former president Barack Obama to foster global ties between the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. Phenomenal Girls Society is an organisation that provides empowerment and leadership development for girls between the ages of six to 13. The Johnny Caker is an initiative launched months after hurricane Irma.

Each year young leaders and entrepreneurs are selected after going through an application process and participate in a five-week fellowship where they are connected with leaders in their field throughout the US from whom they can learn and gain new skills, it was stated in a press release on Monday. Cantave-Sam was selected from amongst more than 2,000 applicants. The fellowship also provides opportunities for networking, venture capital, mentorship and crowdfunding.
